G5 file to PowerBook 5300cs?

I need to transfer a 3 MB installer file (OMS Installer) from my dual G5 to an oldie but goodie PowerBook 5300cs that I just picked up to control an Opcode 5XL MIDI patchbay with it.

Can anyone think of a way how I could accomplish this file transfer, given that the G5 has just about nothing in common with the 5300cs? (It's FireWire & USB vs. SCSI, no floppy vs. 1.4 FD, 10/100 Ethernet, vs AppleTalk, 28K modem & serial ports...)

If it helps, I also have access to a P4 WinXP PC, with the usual complement of PC odds and ends (USB, FireWire, floppy) and a PowerBook 1400cs to which the OMS file has been transferred already via CD-R. The 5300cs, like the 1400cs, has a strange 3-blob black thing in the rear that could be an IR port for all I know. (I never used IR.) Thank you in advance for all the suggestions

Guess if you already have it on the 1400cs and have a printer cable floating around you can appletalk the 1400cs to the 5300cs and transfer the 3mb file that way. It will be slow but it should work, just turn file sharing on on the 1400 in the control panels and then go on the 5300 and go to the chooser to locate the 1400. If you have ethernet even better but neither had this option built in.

The IR transmitters are what you see on the rear and you can also check and see if you have the drivers required installed already.

Here's how to try that out.

-go to control panels, select AppleTalk
-select connect via Infrared port (top choice)
-close and save
-go to control panels, select file sharing
-configure network identity with password
-start file sharing
-close and save
-in chooser make sure appletalk is turned on

on the other laptop
-do same as above but finally go to chooser and click on AppleShare if everything is working you should now see the other laptop.

If this doesn't work it could be that IR isn't working, you can do the above with a std printer cable instead just make sure appletalk is working on that port.

Or (yes I'm making this complex sorry) go out and pick up a $10 Wavelan silver PCMCIA wireless card and a wireless router. This card will work with both the 1400 and 5300 (have used it in both) and will let you use them on the internet if you are so inclined.

Hello Kevin,

Thank you for your exhausting reply. The IR networking worked! I managed to install OMS on both the 1400 and the 5300 today.

The 5300cs fell into digital narcolepsy right after the ensuing normal Shutdown (it ignores its Power button blissfully since) but it's OK, the 1400cs still functions. I was able to launch Opcode's OMS Studio Setup on it and blaze through the setup process right to the end where it doesn't see the connected Opcode hardware. (Good old Opcode, it always does that. Things are back to normal... :-)) Why, gotta keep some challenge for tomorrow too.)

Thank you again and greetings from Hawaii
George
